Artist Profile of artist Liz Spooner

Thank you for visiting my website.

My paintings are based upon observations, memories, moments and emotions, past and present.

They also come from an enjoyment of materials and their effects, which I have spent a lifetime understanding.

But other experiences play a part in the changing surfaces I enjoy and pursue. I have studied and taught ceramics, sculpture, textiles and photography as well as painting and all these play some role whilst I paint. I strive to be more adventurous and enjoy experimenting.

But the most important aspect of all, is the joy of colour and its emotions. Placing colour against colour, finding a poetry within the marks on the canvas and expanding them.

Years ago I developed my 'chaos theory' in order to stretch and maintain originality, trying to keep all images spontaneous and individual. I like to start painting very freely and then refine the marks, building layers using different techniques.

My most enjoyable subjects are the wild fields, hence the name 'poppylady', given to me about 10 years ago. It is the energy created by the vigorous growth and the seemingly random, juxtaposition of colour, shapes and patterns which are fantastic!
These form my main inspiration, clawing at childhood memories exploring the fields, having the freedom to roam and now with the dynamic fields of Menorca.

It is this energy which is also in the people, ordinary people, creating extraordinary energy and passion which forms deep memories from my childhood, growing up in a mining village, in the Derbyshire countryside. It is echoed here in Spain with the fiestas and drive of the local people. Also that freedom is still here where it has disappeared in some areas of England.

This creative spirit never stops, it never will. It is my passion.
